A49 Link Road Wigan

on Tue Sep 27 2016, 11:26
The Goose Green to Westwood Park Link Road, is due to start construction soon and I know that Tomplum is really looking forward to work on the new road starting and mac said in another topic that they have been pegging out for the road bridge over the stream, so this is a plan of the new road, which has been made by a company called Tekla Smile

Sniffy Brook Bridge

Entire Road

Sir Bob, you may remember not long ago there was a perfectly good bridge there, it carried railway freight. The council knocked it down, and are now spending on a new one.

Goose Green to Westwood Park Link Road, is due to start construction soon ,,,,,,,,

You've been saying this for years now Sir Bob, have you ever heard of the story ' cry Wolf'
Where are the wefare cabins, where are the storage compounds, where are the bloody great diggers to level the ground, there's 3 months work just putting all that in place before any constuction can take place,
p,s all the above will not affect traffic, its all ' offroad' workings and it could have been happening for months if work was a bout to begin,
the 'Sir Bob' link road is a phantom link road

When the road has been built I think it should be named 'Tomplum Way' Smile

Again, the last I heard was the road has been reduced from a dual carriageway to a normal through road.
Pointless either way as it won't reduce traffic.

If its only a single carraigeway and they close Poolstock Lane as planned, It will make getting into Wigan harder for everyone, Like you say pointless,

I don't think they'll call it after me Sir Bob, I'm not a supporter of it, I'm thinking of digging a underground camp and becoming the Wigan 'swampy', I've never been one to want to travel 5 miles to get 1 mile from where i am, Its reverse progression Very Happy

It isn't pointless at all. It'll just cause congestion and therefore justify a congestion charge. As nyce horse says, devious people.

Had this argument with sledge (now stardelta) on WW a while ago. He admitted the congestion wwas down to bringing about a congestion charge.

Last year a passenger of fireplace, who purported to work for the council. told fireplace that the road across the flashes will only be a single lane road.

Sir Bob may be right as for some reason major road projects nearly always seem to be done in the winter months. I'll be glad when it is done and dusted though.

I sold my house in Mottram Drive off Poolstock Lane 37 years ago because they were supposedly building that new road then.

Tom Plum, I remember the change over from Lancashire to Greater Manchester but like most Wiganers chose to ignore it. Still put Lancs on any letters to Wigan.

Postally we are still in Lancashire. Apparently it would have cost too much to change it.

Just been talking to three reprobate labourers over where the road was going to be. He told me it was going to be houses now as the road has been cancelled. Wainhomes have the land. apparently.

I dunno, tomp. Three reprobates, they had two wheelbarrows and three spades and came from the new estate opposite litle lane, were digging soil up. I very politely told them to eff off. They said they worked for Wainhomes . I said there was no housebuilding here. They disagreed and said the road was cancelled.
To be fair I didn't care they were digging soil, but it was a part of a little embankment preventing cars going that way.

Strangely, when I was so kind as to tell them to eff off...They effed off!

To repeat from another thread, the last official mention about the new road, was from tfgm last October which said

Wigan Gateway A49 Link

3.3 Planning consent for the scheme has been secured and Conditional
Approval was granted in September 2015, in line with the agreed Growth
Deal governance arrangements. Wigan Council and TfGM are currently
working together to further develop the Full Business Case and associated
contractual arrangements for the scheme.

I was told last week that the full 'business case' mentioned, is a procedure whereby all aspects of everything, have to be updated in real time, so there are no nasty surprises when construction starts.

But I still have me doubts, it is as though Wigan has missed the boat once again, just like what happened in the early 1990's when route 225 was ready to go, so I would be very surprised if that road now gets built, which no doubt will please folk who don't want it to be built Smile

not guilty  M'Lud,
I'm against the closing of Poolstock lane as a way into Wigan and the moving of the island at Marus Bridge, ( too late for that), not the building of a new road,

Well if it's not to be built, the route should be landscaped, by scraping all that crap off what is there now and in 1986 when I first moved around here, that was not long after those trees had been planted, the trees which they chopped down a couple of years ago and in 1986 those trees were just small bushes and I took a couple of photos of the embankment back then and if I can find those photographs I will scan and post them.
In better times the council would have scraped the crap off, put down a layer of top soil, planted trees and possibly have laid a cycle path along there.

Actually, British rail gave the land to Manchester Council. They landscaped it and asked wigan Borough to maintain it. They didn't, they just left it as was from Manchester north's work. Then they sold it.
That was a nature preserve for probably a hundred or so years when the rail tracks were there, and continued to be so when they were removed.
