First topic message reminder :

The Goose Green to Westwood Park Link Road, is due to start construction soon and I know that Tomplum is really looking forward to work on the new road starting and mac said in another topic that they have been pegging out for the road bridge over the stream, so this is a plan of the new road, which has been made by a company called Tekla Smile

Not my cabin, mine is at Westwood Way... but I did walk over to Poolstock Compound last night to help the guard there to repair fencing.

Well it looks like they are proceeding along with the same plan as drawn up about three years back, which is it starts with construction of the main compounds and then satellite compounds and the first job on the new road is to scrape off the top soil and vegetation and any other crap and they have now fenced off the roundabout access to it on Warrington Road at Goose Green

I was talking to a man last Friday who works on Plant Hire, he drives diggers and such like and he goes from job to job around the Northwest, in that one week he might be digging up someone's back garden and next he might be working on a new road, such as the Westwood Link Road and he was telling me that firms like Jones Bros, who are building the road, use a combination of their own equipment and employees to do the building and when they come to a part of the project, which needs extra equipment and man power, they then hire those extra resources as they are needed, sub contracting the work, which is where he comes into the picture ....

He said that he was hoping to get some local work from the new link road construction, because he lives literally within spitting distance of the new road in Poolstock and his firm which I won't say which it is, but he told me (I luv secrets jocolor ) they do work for Jones Bros, so I says to him "hee they are really getting on with it now aren't they" to which he said with amusement "No they have not even started on it yet" to which I thought of Tom and said "Oooh" he carried on "they are still taking off the top soils and replacing them with hardcore" What a Face

So that must mean they have to remove all of the old railway line embankment and then dig down and remove all of the railway embankment foundations (if there are any) and then dig a bit more and put down hardcore, so yoo must be talking about thousands and thousands of tons of shit being removed and no doubt being processes as hazardous type material rabbit

I've just had a butchers through the fence on the path of St Pauls Church and the new houses, The only work being done is the canal bridge footings, It seems to me the canal bridge will be the first signs of life to the new road, The muck they move is sold, each wagon load is moved on Price, Think of it this way, If you wanted a ton of muck for your garden, it would cost you £50 at the very least, A wagon will hold 50 tons, nothing is thrown away,

Yes but that muck looks like nasty stuff, the old railway embankment was made from the spoil of a local pit and I used to know the name of the pit and it looks very black stuff, as though there is a lot of coal in it, so surely that might mean that it is 'contaminated' cat

I think it was Moss Pit Sir Bob.

They have started to work on the canal bridge on the Scotsmans Flash side of the canal, I am told in is going to be a reinforced earth bridge... with the earth being held back with plastic!

The Westwood side has had test drilling done this last week, which is now done and bridge work should begin early January.

They must be very big trucks to carry 50 tons. They are the type normally used on open cast mining. Certainly not allowed on highways.

Sure you are correct Tom but it must be a nice long run and great ground conditions to get those beasts rumbling along.

As ever Tonker you are correct. We have lots over here working in the oil sands. However I doubt you will see them in Worsley Mesnes. I think the biggest I saw on road construction in the UK was a Cat 767 and the conditions had to be ideal. I think Macs had them in the M55 where they worked for months hauling away peat at the Blackpool end of the job. Mind you that was in 1974 so I could have the numbers mixed up.

Mac can't even drive a BMW proper, never mind a Cat 767!    Laughing

They probably want to get the canal bridge done first, for construction to coincide with the winter shutdown of the canal for winter maintenance, so that by the spring when all the boaters are back, the roadworks are not in the way of the canal users Smile

Good thinking Sir Bob, that comes under the heading of 'forward planning' a gift that is not often associated with Wigan Council nor building contractors, I think is was probably that the canal bridge was the first structure to be fabricated and will be the first to be delivered, Very Happy

This is the largest truck on the site, and it was delivered during the night on a low loader with a wide load escort.

@oaplum wrote:you're not clued up to modern security procedures Sir Bob, Caddie has to do a patrol every  so often, there will be a pre planned route which alternates, along the route will be eletronic sensors that log Caddies activities, if he does not picked up by the sensors, ' M' sends out 008 to find out why, if he's asleep in the hut, he is TERMINATED, Very Happy

I do have what is called a Diestar unit, and I have to register it at certain points on the site.  I do not have a set patrol route, but I must be registered as visiting all the sensor points on a given patrol. It also has GPS and will register any long periods of inactivity.

If a 'very big' dumptruck carries 50 tons, surely one that can carry 35 tons can't be regarded as 'a baby'?  Laughing
