"In my opinion, this is the best documentary about the Northern Soul scene to date, it's been done with love and affection. Produced and Directed by Maurice O'Brien and Edited by David Arthur. Most documentaries covering the music that I love make me cringe, this one gives me goosebumps"

Admin , no I was married with a child and the Wallgate PC in 1973 . There was very little problems at the Casino other than knocked off cars from all over the country left in Wigan ,locals cars being knocked off and dumped all over the country , and daft soft "upps" type of drugs . There were hardly any fights either inside or in the town centre., and we had the occasional body floating on a Sunday morning in the public baths . The majority just came to dance . So in comparison , it seemed a good time for the young 'uns . afro afro afro

I was married and was busy looking after two young children. But my younger siblings had a good time there.

The Soul Survivors by Russ Winstanley gives you a good insight into what went on behind the scenes at Wigan Casino.

"In the early hours of a September morning in 1973, a huge WWI building tentatively opened its doors to the cult followers of an underground dance scene. The unfashionable Casino Club was open for business for its first-ever Northern Soul all-nighter. Little could the promoters have realised the phenomenon they were creating - a phenomenon that would put Wigan and the Casino on the map, not only across the length and breadth of Britain but also in Europe and America. For eight years the Wigan Casino all-night Nothern Soul sessions achieved fame, notoriety and, eventually, legendary status among youngsters all over Britain. It was loved by each of its 100,000 members, voted the world's best disco by the American-based magazine Billboard and started its own record label and magazine. Its DJs unearthed rare 1960s American soul recordings and launched them into the national pop charts, reviving the careers of many black artists. Northern Soul was the youth culture of the 1970s and is still a major influence on many artists recording today"

" Little could the promoters have realised the phenomenon they were creating "

What a load of self-promoting bollox.  "The phenomenon they were 'COPYING' - ", is what it should say!

They copied what had been going on for years in the Midlands.  in venues like The Torch, in Tunstall.  Top Rank in Hanley.  The Twisted Wheel -  (The birthplace of Northern Soul, Manchester’s Twisted Wheel was the premier spot to dance all night to black soul music (along with others, like Peter Stringfellow’s Mojo club in Sheffield),),  Blackpool Mecca  ..... etc. etc. etc..

And Russ Winstanley used to be a DJ at the Torch long before the Casino.

1963 to 1971?

1965 to 1973?

1967 to 1979?

1973 to 1981? A bit of a late jump onto that bandwagon, eh. !!!

Not a hatred of Wigan, Mac.  A hatred of people who shoot shit.  Especially shooting shit for financial gain!
Russ Winstanley knows that he's lying in that book. It's only interesting if you know no better. And if you REFUSE TO BELIEVE ANYTHING ABOUT ANYWHERE OTHER THAN WIGAN !

I do, I dislike Winstanley. I know about The Wheel and the birth of the NS movement. I know it closed before the Casino opened some two years later.  I know Wigan Casino took the scene on to bigger things once the Wheel closed down. Once the Cassino closed there were Venues to go at Crewe, Morecambe, etc. (They are in Wigan, you know)
Still a largeish cult following.

I liked some NS, but most of it was slow, boring crap. Much preferred the Motown all nighters. (They are in Wigan, you know)

I liked the music and dancing to be honest, my real passion was with Motown though. Some of the singers who became NS artists were as good as some Motown signings but a lot were crap. I won't go into the myth that only uppers and speed was the order of the night cos that's a load of crap too, hard drugs cocaine etc was available on request.

Oh forgot to say Winstanley was just a coat tail hanger, his knowledge on the record labels and some of the artists minimal in my opinion, he seemed to brush up on them after the Casino closed for his TV interviews and newspaper stories. Oh and he ripped folk off too.

After consulting my scrying tools, I see you did buy a record called 'What' by a singer who went by the name' Judy Street'.
