Hindley History Society January Meeting

on Tue Jan 10 2017, 21:54
It was Hindley History Society monthly meeting last night.

We had a night of music and recitations.

The music in particular was very topical and local.

One of our members had in the 1960's penned songs about Borsdane Wood and

Wigan Country Park, also a song about Ludovic Berry and Dorothy titled "Ludovic's

Final Rest".

Most enjoyable.

The youtube clips below are the songs we heard last night.

It's unaccompanied fingers-in-your-ears stuff, so won't be to everybody's taste,

but the lyrics are worth a listen.

Until the 19th Century a tourist attraction in the shape of two 'burning wells' existed in Hindley, caused by the natural seepage of inflammable coal gas through water. Until 2001, Hindley was also home to one of the last surviving clog making businesses in the country, Walter Hurst. Whilst the shop has now closed, Walter can still be found at Wigan Pier.

Here Walter made a good few clogs back in the day

Thanks Mr Mac

Champion, Hindley History Society do a "Summer walk" every July.

Last year as part of the walk we visited the site of the "Burning Wells".

It was a real tourist attraction in its day and people came from all over the country.
