A trio of iconic buildings at the heart of the Wigan Pier complex are being given their best chance of a reboot in a long time. Wigan Council has unveiled a six-week tender period for bids to be made to redevelop the edifices, which have stood idle for many years, as part of the council’s flagship regeneration project. There has been significant interest from developers in the buildings, which flank the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, in the year which marks the 80th anniversary of George Orwell’s landmark book The Road to Wigan Pier. The erstwhile industrial premises comprise The Warehouse, known locally as the former Way We Were Museum, the one-time Orwell public house, and the Education Centre. They are central to the Wigan Pier Quarter regeneration area and have attracted interest from across the region as a destination for investment and new industries

Plans to breathe life in Wigan’s Pier Quarter are edging closer after the council received a number of “excellent” offers from developers during the bidding process. The regeneration of the pier buildings has attracted interest from “major developers” causing the town hall to extend the original bidding deadline by six weeks. Concerns recently raised about the future of Trencherfield Mill, which houses Wigan’s only working steam engine, were quickly quashed by the council earlier this month who said there are “no plans” to close the engine room in the near future. Coun David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We have received some excellent and varied bids from developers to breathe new life into the iconic Wigan Pier buildings. “Many of the developers have experience in regenerating buildings of this kind both regionally and nationally.“Now the crucial work begins to decide which of the bids should be taken forward.

A significant step has been taken in the regeneration of Wigan’s most famous quarter. The council has announced that The Old Courts – the town’s renowned arts venue – will work alongside property developer Step Places on transforming the historic Wigan Pier area into a new cultural hub. The council unveiled its 10-year vision to regenerate the Pier in 2014, with Step Places brought in to spearhead it last year. A planning application is expected to be submitted within weeks. Old Courts MD Dave Jenkins said: “Wigan Pier is known virtually everywhere you go, so we’re excited to be involved in a project we think will add huge value to the town. In recent years, there has been a definite cultural surge in Wigan with the opening of various venues, bars and eateries and it feels like Wigan is now becoming a credible destination.”

Long-awaited plans to transformic iconic but neglected buildings at Wigan Pier have been unveiled.

Canal-side walkways, waterside town houses, an artisan food hall with conference and events venues are all part of the planning proposal that has been submitted for the future of Wigan Pier by Manchester develop

Subject to planning approval the development will see Step Places, The Old Courts, Wigan Council and the Canal and River Trust work together to transform the currently disused 18th century industrial buildings into a vibrant cultural destination for both locals and visitors, which is an important part of Wigan Council’s masterplan and vision for the future of the town.

A new gin distillery and microbrewery will be created on the site of the old The Way Way Were museum along with an impressive food hall, with spaces for café, bar & deli retailers, with decorative glass features and a large space for seating on the ground and mezzanine floors.

The former Orwell public house will become an impressive waterside events venue hosting weddings, exhibitions, conferences and much more and the former education centre will be brought back to life with renewed focus on community integration and cultural workshops and classes.

The next chapter of Wigan Pier’s regeneration story has been written today with members giving the green light to the widely anticipated regeneration proposals at Wigan Council’s planning committee.

The decision means developer Step Places, cultural organisation The Old Courts, Wigan Council and the Canal and River Trust can collectively transform the currently vacant 18th century industrial buildings into a vibrant cultural and residential offer.

A wedding venue, gin-distillery, micro-brewery, food hall and waterside town houses are just a few of the highlights of the iconic Wigan Pier site, which will now be developed when building starts in August 2019.
