31 st July 1917 The start of the Battle of Passchendaele (the third Battle of Ypres - World War I) as the British attacked the German lines. The battle lasted until 10th November 2017. Recent reports estimate that there were 260,00 casualties on each side. Lloyd George called it one of the greatest disasters of the war.

Doctor Who first appeared on BBC TV at 17:16:20 GMT on Saturday, 23 November 1963; this was eighty seconds later than the scheduled programme time, due to the assassination of John F. Kennedy the previous day. It was to be a regular weekly programme, each episode 25 minutes of transmission length
