31 st July 1917 The start of the Battle of Passchendaele (the third Battle of Ypres - World War I) as the British attacked the German lines. The battle lasted until 10th November 2017. Recent reports estimate that there were 260,00 casualties on each side. Lloyd George called it one of the greatest disasters of the war.

down on the moors near Bolton  35 of the passengers were
killed many of whom were connected with the Isle Of Man
