31 st July 1917 The start of the Battle of Passchendaele (the third Battle of Ypres - World War I) as the British attacked the German lines. The battle lasted until 10th November 2017. Recent reports estimate that there were 260,00 casualties on each side. Lloyd George called it one of the greatest disasters of the war.

During a football match at Bradford City's
Valley Parade stadium between Bradford City
and Lincoln City , a wooden stand is engulfed
in flames , after a stray cigarette starts a blaze.
56 spectators die and well over 200 are injured
