St Josephs/St Thomas Caroline St

on Thu Jan 11 2018, 18:23
These images show the sorry state of an historic Wigan church now blighted by long disuse and vandalism. St Joseph’s RC Church on Caroline Street closed its doors to worshippers more than 20 years ago and the new pictures reveal it has since deteriorated into a truly sad condition.

That was the church that I grew up with,I was brought up nearby.the right hand door keeps being stoved in,we parked on Go Outdoors a couple of months ago had a look inside,it was very sad seeing it in that state,it was caked in pigeon droppings and the smell was horrendous, massive holes in the roof..but has anyone noticed..the statue of St Joseph on the front wall is nearly as white as when I used to pass it going to School.

The church is right facing GoOutdoors at the bottom of Caroline St..everybody loved Father Shea and had his photo on their sideboards, even my Grandma, but I didn't like him..and Mr Maguire used to whip the boys with a buckled belt,we'd hear them yell, now Sister Frances in the girls side was a horrible person..a Sister Marie on the infants side was like an angel.
St Thomas School was just further down than St Josephs and our School was nearly facing that.

Mr Maguire was the headmaster ,there used to be a brilliant photo of him and the rest of the staff on WW,but for some reason it was taken off.

Thanks again MrsA ,this brought so many memories back, didn't the choir sound lovely,I and my School friends sang in the choir when we were 14-15 years old. The man at the door ushering them in is Albert Eckersley..one time Mayor of Wigan,I used to chat with him on WW..he has since passed..we chatted about Wallgate time and time again,he was a lot older than me,but I used to play out with his Sister...it was lovely just to hear the old hymns we used to sing..again thank you.

I never went to the Market Square with St Williams but my elder sister went to St Patrick's school and when they walked I followed them and sang along.

I did and the nuns got used to me walking along with my sister, they would invite me into school after for a drink of pop with the St Pats kids. One or two of the nuns were extremely strict and aggressive, to be honest very scary.

You never knew the nun over us girls Joseph ..Sister Francis..somebody once said on WW.."I start to shake just typing her name"she was a terror..yet the one over the little uns was like an angel...if you've never seen the film Philomena it gives you a good idea of what they used to be like..not all of them bear in mind
