I don’t know which one is Bishopgate, Gassey. Question

Hoping this one hasn’t been done before ...

Very Happy ‘This stone curb and railing belong to the Rector and Church Wardens. 1888.’

Near Wigan Parish Church - is Bishopgate the exit to the gardens? Smile

Bishopgate joins on to the corner of Hallgate. It's a short stretch where the cobblers is. In fact there's a plaque on the old phone exchange wall opposite, but I can't remember what it commemorates. confused

By the way, the corner that the railings in the pic go round is Churchgate

The plaque commemorates the building there before it. WW Album (A.W.’s Comment)

Thanks, Jo Anne. I'd been doing some squinting on Google Streetview. Very Happy Look just above and left of the parking signpost.

Thanks Corky, I’ll look out for that the next time I’m there. Smile

Wigan Town Trail (p.51):
“On the opposite side of Dorning Street a small plaque on the Telephone Exchange commemorates Walmesley House built by John Walmesley in the second half of the 17th Century. On 10th December, 1745, during his retreat, Bonnie Prince Charlie spent the night here after the Jacobites failed to take the English Crown at Derby. The Duke of Cumberland, in pursuit of the Prince, spent the following night here. In the 18th Century it was used as a private day and boarding school but was demolished before 1940.”

Bugger! I nearly commented that it looked like a Calvary scene, crossed with telegraph poles on a railway line.

I must have seen, but not studied, it when I've visited the museum.

It was originally displayed at head height, I think, and it really impressed me, but some of its impact is lost now it’s so high up. Like the plaque on the telephone exchange building. Very Happy
