Let b = number of boys.
Let g = number of girls.

(1/3b) x 9 + (1/4g) x 12 = 87

Solve for b and g confused

Last one for now

A fire engine travels seven miles to a fire at a speed of 45 mph. Its tank holds 500 gallons of water but has been leaking at a rate of 25 gallons per hour throughout the journey, leaving the fire engine short of the 497 gallons of water required to put out the fire. How much extra water is required to extinguish the fire?

Time taken to get to fire = 7/45 = 0.155hour.

Water lost = 25 x 0.155 = 3.875 gallons

500 – 3.875 = 496.125 gallons

Extra water needed = 475 – 496.125 = 0.875 gallons

Quite pleased with my answer.

I think it depends on how many decimal places you use

in the calculation 7/45,  I used 0.155, but it has a recurring

number 5, so you could use 0.155555.

If you use 0.155555, you get 0.8888875 gallons.

H = 504

The difference between successive numbers goes up by 6 each time.
