A group on a sponsored hike covered one eighth of the total distance on the first day.

The next day they covered one quarter of what was left.

The following day they covered two fifths of the remainder and on the fourth day half of the remaining distance.

The group now have 12 miles left.

How many miles have they walked?

I'm sure I've made a pig's ear of this, but my logic seems sound, here goes :-

Let L = total distance.

Day 1 distance = L/8

Day 2 distance = 1/4 x 7/8 L = 7/32L

Distance covered in days 1 & 2 = L/8 + 7/32L = 11/32L

Distance remaining = L – 11/32 L = 21/32L

Day 3 distance = 2/5 x 21/32L = 42/160L

Distance covered in days 1 to 3 = 11/32L + 42/160L = 97/160L

Distance remaining = L – 97/160L = 63/160L

Day 4 distance = 1/2 x 63/160L = 63/320L

Total distance covered days 1 to 4 = 97/160L + 63/320L = 257/320L

Total distance = distance travelled + 12

L = 257/320L + 12

L – 257/320L = 12

63/320L = 12

L = 60.95 miles

Therefore ddistance travelled = 60.95 – 12 = 48.95

Answer 48.95 miles

I’m sure the answer should be a whole number!!!!!!!!

I may be wrong of course!!!!! LOL

Blimey O'Riley Mrs A, I have surprised myself, quite chuffed with my logic.

I of course kept the decimal point numbers to a minimum.

Where's myg when you need to show off LOL Very Happy

The pattern seems to be, the two left hand side numbers added together

and then multiplied by the same number, to give the RH side number.

Therefore 38 = (3 + 8 ) x 38 = 418  (if you put a close bracket after the number 8, you get a smiley face,

hence the gap after the  number 8.

Answer = 418

Yourt too good RMJ

418. Each number on the left is multiplied by the sum of its two digits to give the number on the right.

Thank you Mrs A.

It took me a while to suss it, I was trying to connect the numbers

downwards as well, which of course is not the case.

Anyroad, I hope I've given a few brain cells a workout LOL!!!!

In a town a number of men and women are entitled to a tax rebate.

One third of all the men in the town receive £12

and one quarter of all the women receive £16.

If £35,824 is distributed in total,

what is the population of the town?

We have had this one before.Ray you do not need to get separate answers for the numbers of men and women ,just the total.

Cheers for the 'heads up' myg.

I had created two unknowns, let 'M' = No of men, and let 'W' = No of women,

and as usual got bogged with the maths.

What's worrying is that I don't remember doing it before!!!!!! LOL.

I'll have a rethink.

"Join the club"  Very Happy

LOL!!!!! Very Happy

I hope I’m right in my workings out, it feels like I have done it logically.

I always get good advice from myg and her input is always valued, but try as I may

I couldn’t help but think if the fractions of men and women receiving tax rebates were

included in the question, then they must be relevant to the answer.

Sorry myg

I may be wrong of course.

Let M = Total No of men

Let W = Total No of women

(1/3  x M x 12) + (1/4 x W x 16)  =  35,824

(12 M) ÷ 3 + (16W) ÷  4 =  35,824

4M + 4W =  35,824

M + W  =  8956  (divide through by 4)

Answer 8956

Looking at my workings out, did I need to use ‘M’ ad ‘W’, and was myg right after all?  LOL  Embarassed  Very Happy

I think you are right Mrs A, but using them helped with the logic.

Anyroad, more importantly, was my answer correct?
