A man is found murdered in his office. The suspects are Peter, Julie, Jason, Molly and Brian.

In the office is a calendar with the numbers 6,4,9,10,11 written in blood.

Who is the killer?

JASON

Thought at first it was A = 1  B = 2  etc, but I think it is months of the year,

so 6 = J, 4 = A etc.

Absolutely correct

Jason is the killer.
The numbers indicate months and the first letter of each month spells the name of the murderer, e.g. the 6th month is June and the first letter of June is J, the 4th month is April and the first letter of April is a, and so on

A coach covers its outward journey at 50 mph.

It returns, over exactly the same distance at 33.3333 mph.

What is the average speed of the coach over the entire journey?

The maths should be V1 + V2 divided by 2.

Therefore 50 + 33.3333 / 2 = 41.66665 mph

I may be wrong of course!!!!!!

Can’t understand how you can get a nice ‘round’ number for the average

speed when there is 4 digit decimal included (33.3333).

I demand an enquiry with myg as an arbitrator!!!!! LOL Very Happy

The maths is average speed= 2x d/(d/50+ d/33.3333)  where d is the distance one way.Using a calculator this give 39.9999976
assuming the return speed is 33.3 recurring gives an answer of 40 without a calculator.
The logic is that it travels for a longer time at the slower speed therefore the average will be closer to the slower speed than the faster not the average of the two speeds.

Sorry for late response, but Thursday is a busy day for Yours Truly, I’m hardly at home, and it’s my turn to do the ‘tea’ which I’ve just had.
Myg, thank you for your brilliant and insightful answer.
It seems I have over simplified the maths LOL!!!!!
I assume from the formula you have shown, that the value of ‘d’ for distance travelled cancels itself out since no value of distance is given.
It’s difficult to type and to visualise formulae with fractions because of the ‘forward slash’ instead of the line dividing the numerator and denominator.
Anyroad, your answer supports the MENSA solution, which suggests YOU should be a member of MENSA, well done.

In the first 25 six-a-side football games there's an average of 4 goals per game. After a further 50 games, the average number of goals per game increases to 6. What is the average number of goals per game in the last 50 games only?

In the first 25 games 25 x 4 = 100 goals were scored

Overall (25 + 50)= 75 x 6 = 450 goals were scored

Therefore, in the last 50 games 450 -100 = 350 goals were scored.

Average number of goals in the last 50 = 350 / 50 = 7

Answer = 7 goals per game
