A family have opened their savings jar to boost the festive food budget.

The jar contains £25.80. It is made up of four different denominations of coins and the largest denomination is £1.

The jar contains exactly the same number of each coin.

How many of each coin is there and what are the denominations?

A caterpillar covers its outward journey to a vegetable patch at a speed of 114 metres per hour.

After filling up with his favourite foods the caterpillar returns, over exactly the same distance, at 38 metres per hour.

What is the caterpillar’s average speed over the entire journey?

It was a little late last night for brain work.

I have woke with a purpose this morning, and after a healthy breakfast

of smoked mackerel on wholemeal toast, I am set up for the morning.

I have had a think about this teaser.

Using myg’s formula from a previous similar problem, I have arrived thus:-

Average speed = 2 x d / (d/114 + d/38), where d is distance travelled one way.

I find the way the equation looks is a little confusing, because the division bars are

represented by an oblique line.

I know that I have to make the (d/114 + d/38) term have a common denominator.

This should be (d/114 + 3d/114) = (4d/114)

This would make the final equation = 2d / (4d/114)

Average speed 57 M/hr

I may be wrong of course.

How did I do myg?, I would appreciate your help when you have time.

EDIT - I will be back around lunchtime, lots to do.
