Thanks again, Tom. I don’t envy the man in the mud - would gaiters be any good?

Good stuff, Mester Tom.

I don't think you'll see the gates removed. They are being repaired rather than replaced. Same thing happened earlier this year at Lock 73 by the Rabbit Rocks.

https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/notice/12905/lock-2-bottom-lock-poolstock-leigh-branch-leeds-and-liverpool-canal

Incidentally, the gates on Poolstock 1 were totally replaced in Nov 2015. Also, Poolstock Locks were not part of the original canal. They were a later addition due to subsidence. In a case of swings and roundabouts, the locks at Dover Lock were no longer needed.

I posted earlier on another thread about the locks being repaired using French Oak as opposed to Metal now English heritage have taken hold of the show.  afar better look, but a shame they aren't planting Oak trees near the canal so they can be used to repair in another hundred or so years down the (canal) line.

Nope, they import the french oak as there isn't enough English Oak (Quercus robur) to use.

(I shall ignore the 'British oak' nonsense)

Quelle surprise!

Still, I suppose them Frenchies led the way when it came to canals.

Had the Duke of Bridgewater not taken his gap year, he wouldn't have been inspired to build Britain's first (telegram for Tonker) modern canal.
