What does this road sign mean and how old might it be?

Very Happy Fred’s on the right track, but I wondered why it’s a circle.

Usually a red triangle on a white background. Could ithave been a private stretch of track perhaps owned by a mine, therefore they put a round sign up?

Is that when a round sign would apply, Admin? I had a quick google but didn’t find anything. Smile

You could be right, Admin. Smile

The sign is on the lamppost on the right - it’s the Wutchie in the background & the photo was taken from Withington Lane*

*Inspired by Sir Bob’s thread (Oct) Where And What I’d gone for a nosey walk down Withington Lane Smile

Is it not a sign telling of a barrier?

I think it's modelled off the old level crossing with gate sign, but I suspect what it really means is that if you carry on driving down there towards Hindley Golf club, there's a barrier and you are locked in and have to reverse back.

the sign design pre dates the lamp post. I think the path leading past the Wutchie is the old Springs Branch line . There must have been a level crossing there at one time, gated or not.

Yes. If you look the diagonal doings leans the other way. Much like yourself.

I reckon it's a home made sign to warn people that it is a private road or similar.

There is a sign a bit closer to the old school building that says ‘STOP - COTTAGE & FARM ACCESS ONLY’:

Old Springs Branch Line(?) ...

There was a level crossing down that way, or thereabouts. Probably near the Ben Johnson. I bet you can buy old postcards featuring it.

Springs Branch was a line which ran from Lower Ince (Spring View) up past Top Lock and turned left towards Haigh. The 'springs' being New Springs. I'd always assumed the Springs came from Spring View.

Thanks, Corky, my Grandad worked for years at Springs Branch depot in Spring View & I’d always assumed the same. Smile

Triangular signs are warnings and circular signs are instructions. The one in Jo-Anne's picture appears to be oval

Corky is this the one You mean, This line ran up by the old steel  works over the Lancaster canal arm and crossed over Withington Lane & carried on round towards  the road at the bottom of Ivy Brow.

I’m not sure if it was originally round & has become bent, Hieronymous. I’ll look again when I’m next there.

Could it be the angle the photo was taken?

That's a belting picture, Cindy. But I'm trying to place the layout in relation to Jo Anne's photo.

I could do with looking at the map on the wall of Wigan Central. Very Happy
