Rabbit Rocks. Empty Rabbit Rocks.

on Fri Feb 22 2019, 00:54
The gentleman upstairs in our block of flats, always gives me his copy of Lancashire Life. Imagine how surprised I was when I opened the March edition, to find one of the main articles is about "Rabbit Rocks". I thought it may have been  somewhere other than Wigan, but the description of "Kirkless Nature Reserve, accessable from Belle Green Lane, in Ince in Makerfield" Does sort of have you looking for a Corky shaped picture on the page.  The article itself is quite interesting, Explaining that the Rabbit Rocks themselves are a feature of a reclaimed Iron and Steelworks, once the largest in Europe, and are huge cylindrical blocks of slag, formed at the bottom of furnaces. It goes on to describe a lot of the nature at the reserve, including Willow Tits, the UK's most endangered small bird.    Only a couple of pages, but a really good read. Very Happy Very Happy

It's a great place and could be much more if the local idiots would stop destroying the place by dumping rubbish and air gun practising, dirt biking etc.

Its about time the Rabbit Rocks should be given the same status as Ayres Rock and only the native Ince tribes are permitted ritual climbing of the hugely important site

Hope you can upload the feature, Weatherwax, be great to see it. Smile

Would you believe the site was nearly called Hares Rocks but Incers wisely opted for Rabbit to avoid any confusion.

The same tribespeople who keep sacrificing blue wheelie bins at the foot of the edifice?

I think they should carve the faces of Ince sagamores into the thing. A bit like Mount Rushmore in America.

Yeah!!! Managed it. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing      The missing words on the left hand side above the wildlife trust logo, read as follows... Above:  The unusual rabbit rocks were shaped at the bottom of kilns      Right: One of the characters at a Kirkless open day.

Admin to oaplum,

Tom would you go to the rabbit Rocks and do a roving report soon, I'll gladly ok your usual luncheon vouchers, travel exp's and tickets for the upcoming beer sampling night in the rejects bar.

Ok, It would be rude not to,

stay tuned, i can't say a day and time because, there's a sharp shooter on the banks near there with an eye for a peddler on a mission,

Indeed.

His sort are carried shoulder height, up to the pinnacle on one of them doings the Pope used to ride on. Sagamores tend to have gammy knees by the time they reach a certain age and it wouldn't do to see them struggle on the ascent.

I’ll try and look out for Willow Tits, Weatherwax. Smile

How did you climb that steep side with your bike, Tom? I did it this morning sans cycle and this might be sacrilegious but the Rabbit Rocks became Grabbit Rocks. Very Happy

1) Wigan Flashes are the result of mining subsidence and other industrial processes. Natural colonisation and large-scale reclamation works have helped heal the industrial scars, turning the area into the amenity it is today.

2) Billinge Hill, also known as Billinge Lump, is the highest point in Merseyside. A beacon tower is at the summit which was built as a summerhouse to Winstanley Hall in the 18th century.

3) St Catharine’s Church was built in 1839-41. It stands on a geological fault which combined with the coal mining in the area, caused the unusually tall spire to lean and twist. The spire was straightened in 2012.

4) Scholes, recognised by its series of tower blocks which are a prominent feature, was the area where the bombs from the Zeppelin landed in the First World War. It is believed that they were aiming for Kirkless Iron and Steel Works at the time.

Ha Ha well done jo anne, As i crossed the canal at lock 72, there was a lady taking pictures, i wondered if that was you, but it could't have been because you would have got several of me struggling up the side of the hill, At least I know where to avoid and what time to avoid as well, If i can remember, which I most likely won't, Very Happy

Load of rubbish!

The geological fault is stable though however, that has been established by folk a lot smarter than you or I. For the fault to slip it needed an external factor... MINING!

Thus it is mining that cause the flashes to be created.
