Hydrophobic soil?
Sun Feb 01 2015, 08:40
Apologies for this being American but it seems almost inevitable.
The products that I have used are Breaker Dynamic/Curative from Rigby Taylor and Hydretain from Green Infrastructure.

How to test for hydrophobic soil
Sun Feb 01 2015, 08:49
Use a Water Drop Penetration Test.
Tools for the task:
Soil sampler
Pipette
Stopwatch
Ruler/Tape measure
Take a core of soil from the suspect area and allow it to dry naturally for 1 - 2 weeks.
After this time fill your pipette with water and put a drop on the core at various depths and time how long it takes for the water droplet to soak in.
It should take between 5 and 10 seconds for the droplet to soak in. If it takes longer you may have a problem depending on how much longer it takes.
I once did this with a soil core and at 1" depth it took a few seconds. At 2" depth it took a few seconds. At 3" depth it took a few seconds. At 4" depth it took in excess of 7 minutes!! Definitely hydrophobic!!
