Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Empty Lawn Renovs Spring 2015

Mon Mar 23 2015, 07:37
Finally got around to renovating the lawn yesterday. I'm still a bit annoyed that I was unable to do it in Autumn but that's life I suppose.

When scarifying I noticed there was a bit of moss in the lawn so I've probably scattered the spores somewhat. Just have to wait and see.

Anyway, preparation:

Mantis Tiller fitted with scarifying tines:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20003_zps0ejre9wa

Grass seed (mainly fescues) and Spring/Summer fertiliser (16-0-5+Fe)

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20004_zps6ccczpx8

Seed/Fertiliser/Topdressing spreader and electric lawn rake with a bag of 70/30 topdressing:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20005_zpsxkfrjdl1

The lawn before starting. The string line is to ensure I get the right angle when scarifying. Scarifying at 90° tends to rip up the turf.

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20001_zpsbno0aap7

After scarifying in four directions:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20006_zps160vqcdo

It always amazes me just how much rubbish comes out of it.

After tidying with electric lawn rake:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20008_zpsksz7itza

Unfortunately the grassbox on the rake is rather poor. It's too shallow and a bit too far away from the actual machine. C'est la vie!

Mantis Tiller fitted with aeration tines:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20010_zpsnpex8ar0

After aeration:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20011_zpshprrypi5

After tidying with electric lawn rake:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%20renovs%20Spring%202015%20013_zpszsozd6kr

Subsequent to this I spread some grass seed by hand around the edges of the lawn then used the spreader for the main part.

Following this I spread the fertiliser and then the topdressing. I didn't take any photos because it wouldn't have been visible.

I am now rather dependent on the weather. Should see results in about four weeks temperatures and rainfall allowing.

Thats ace! Its obviously an exact science, although I don't think it is something I would ever do. Thanks for the pics - can't wait to see what it looks like in a few weeks.

PS - what are those pom-pom trees in the border - are they peonies?

I don't know about it being an exact science though, obviously, there is science involved. Mainly biology and chemistry.

As for the trees, I don't know. I shall find out.

Well, as far as the lawn is concerned I couldn't have asked for a much better day, yesterday apart from temperatures.

The morning rain should have washed everything in nicely then we had a bit of sun in the afternoon. Should work reasonably well though warmer temperatures would be welcome.

Thats it!  Funnily enough I asked a chap the other day what was flowering behind his fence and for some reason I said Peony to him too, no he said, it begins with C - after a day or so of mulling it over I shouted 'Camelia' when I saw him and he confirmed it was!  I wondered if that was what yours was after.  He is letting me take a cutting off it - so will look online the best way to propagate. Laughing

Well, your lawn is getting plenty water at the mo!

It's about four weeks since I did the renovations and the lawn is, generally coming along nicely although there's still quite a few weed grasses in it. Hopefully the mowing regime will put paid to them. Also spotted a number of miner bee nests in it. I doubt they'll enjoy the treatment of the lawn though.

Before mowing:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%2019-4-2015%20001_zpsvm2tgc2u

After mowing:

Lawn Renovs Spring 2015 Lawn%2019-4-2015%20002_zps4i3r0ucv

I'm not entirely sure why there doesn't seem to have been a good 'take' at the top corner.

Once again I've had to delay lawn renovations till now for various reasons. I did notice quite a bit of moss in the lawn so I treated that with lawn sand and watered it in. It made the lawn rather unsightly of course but you can't make an omelette 'bout breaking eggs.

So then I had to wait a while to make sure the moss was dead as, apparently, moss dies from the bottom upwards and scarifying too soon means spreading spores.

Anyway today I gave it a good scarifying with the Mantis tiller and noticed that I seem to have missed quite a bit of moss which is annoying. It's always amazing, though, the amount of dead material that comes out of it.

It's a bit too hot and dry to do anything further so I'll have to wait till rain is forecast and hope it's showers rather than the deluge we seem to get these days. Sunshine and showers will do me.

I have greenthumb treat my lawns, they do 4 treatments a year at £16 per treatment, its a moss killer and some special formular of their own to green the grass, I'm pleased with the results and think its money well spent, Also after patches of moss have died I reseed to keep an even green lawn,

That will be liquid iron.

Liquid iron will green it up. Have you applied any fertiliser? A summer fertiliser with a high nitrogen content will also help. Look for the N:P:K

N= Nitrogen
P= Potash
K-Potassium

Also, do you aerate it?

Can you push a fork into it with ease? If not it's probably compacted. I hired a machine from a place in Burscough to do some hollow coring. Not this one, though, this is just for your information:

You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs! I'd aerate more frequently if I were you and decompact the lawn if necessary

There's no set frequency. Basically when it's required and if conditions allow.

I'd also advise using your fork the 'right' way round, stick it in. pull it back to about 45°, back to beginning and out. This will both aerate and decompact. Labour intensive though.

I also got to wondering if you or GT had scarified your lawn. It's amazing how much dead stuff comes out of it.

My grandfather put a week solution bleach[Lanry I think it was] on his lawns to remove worms. I remember going behind him and collecting the worms that came up. I've wondered for many years why he would have done this.

Because of worm casts. That is, worms that come to the surface to defecate. Worm casts can cause all sorts of problems. They'll stick to mower roller and cause a mud type problem, they are convenient for weeds to germinate in and they look unsightly.
