I think Momac is referring to a species of Clematis Montana named 'Elizabeth'

(as with Russian vine, often called 'mile a minute')

Grows fast and well against a North Wall.

Is in bloom at the moment.

I planted mine to keep neighbour's Ivy at bay: it does so quite well.

ps it mixes well with other species, so you can extent the bloom season, with variations in the colour.

Three year old 'Elizabeth' smothering next door's Ivy.

Fast growing climber Send_t10

There are mixed together here, four different varieties of clematis, and three of climbing roses: Eliz' blooms first, just as the daffs fade, and roses last till nipped by winter frost.  So from January to December there is some colour: only bare for a few weeks around Christmas.  So I am quite pleased with that on a North-facing wall.

The small flowered, spring flowering species of Clematis are (mostly) bred from the Montana, but many sub-species (varieties) have been developed from this.

I used to buy a couple of new varieties every year.

I posted the Hagley Hybrid last year here

Not bought more this year though: ran out of space.

Yes, I really go for clematis.

There is an excellent book by Stefan Buczacki, who used to do Gardeners' Question Time on the wireless:

Title   'Best Clematis'  - potted history, and lots of pics of varieties, only 95 pages.

I got mine for a quid or two, either Ebay or Amazon: don't recall which as I buy a lot from both.  Could be worth looking.

one here for 1p (plus p&p)

I had a Clematis Montana 'Miss Bateman' at my old house - huge, pure white petals with tiny blue/black markings at the centre - I have yet to see one as beautiful.

Lovely pic Ragbru.

momac, if you decide to be rid of it, you could take some cuttings first.  Then, should you miss it, they will be able to replace it in a year or two.  In fresh growing media, obviously.
