There was a farmer called Roger de Skitter in the late 1600's.
He was working the fields late one night when he was grabbed by three men, they dragged him by the head to a layby where they proceeded to beat him for 5 straight hours.

When the Peelers found his body the next day, they thought  someone had stapled a pink blancmange to his face.

His moans can still be heard of an evening.

The men were never caught, but the tyre tracks they left were from a silver Vauxhall Vectra.
Take care out there!

I do not think there is any hint of the Skitters being haunted!

I spent much of my childhood in Skitters wood: there is not much of it left now.

First Ashton Lord Gerrard's Scout Troop had scout hut on Liverpool Road, and we regularly camped on the grass area alongside of the Skitters: we spend nights pursuing wide games in the woods, and it is where I learned my wood-craft and survival skills.

There is a certain potential woodland has for provoking fear at night: the Skitters was no more endowed with this than would occur in woodland in general.

Our school cross country run used to be a route through the skitters, with the need to jump the brook that is referred to in the above link. On many occasion, we were running too bunched to properly execute such a manoeuvre, when we would all plough into the water. You used to see some very muddy runners on Low Bank Road.

Also the impact of about forty pairs of feet hitting the muddy banks on a daily basis destabilised them, so also the occasional collapse of the bank additionally ducked us into the water.

The tyre marks are still there, and you can hear the engine of the car on some nights.

Fancy highlighting some of the tripe and not even reading other bits!
