am I too early?
Sun Feb 09 2014, 14:54
been pottering in garden today, sown some tomato seeds, marigolds and planted 2 flower discs in hanging baskets, fired up the ole parrafin greenhouse heater and hoping for no frost, do you think I'm being optimistic?

Save your paraffin and start them off on the windowsills.
Thats what I do, but then I never had a paraffin heater.

How is it going TOM? Do you have a maximum and minimum thermometer in your greenhouse? They are handy as they let you know how cold it got in the night.

Tom - Have you not tried Booths up at Appley Bridge?
I found it was cheaper from there than places like The Range etc. But I haven't bought any for a while.

hi Temeluchus, Booths at Apply Bridge only sell kerosene, I like many others thought that was the same, but its not, i used it last year and it sooted up my green house, overnight the greenhouse became a blackhouse, so beware of that one folks,
veggie, I've not got a low/high stat, just a normal one, and every time i look in the temp is above 40 F, so its lookin good, But, I've cobbled up a stove pipe type of heater, so the parrafin heater is warming up a flue pipe I made, so it does two jobs, takes the fumes out of the greenhouse and warms up the flu pipe which acts like a radiator, the problem is the wind howling past the pipe end blows the flame out, so i need to make some adjustments to that,

Thats great TOM - when I had my plot I had a huge greenhouse that was heated by pipes from a stove in the shed at the side of it.

Do you exclude the light? I know some folks cover the pots to keep out the light, I would have thought the temperature is okay, I think they usually say 10-13 degrees.

the lights not excluded, they're covered with some packing material bit like bubble wrap it transparent, but looking at a chart 10-13 is the mid 50's, so its probly not warm enough, just have to be more patient

TOM & Mache - I think that is a sign of a mild winter which has brought forth an early spring. I saw daffodils yesterday and also hawthorn making good growth.

48 cells over two propagaters filled yesterday. Got 4 cayenne cells in, 6 oxheart lettuce, and the rest is a mixture of peppers (cali wonder) and the rest are varieties of tomatoes, including gardeners delight, golden sunrise, alicante.
I shall put some moneymaker in when I get the chance, and a personal favourite - marmande.

Do you like moneymaker? Every grower I have discussed it with say they hate them, and avoid.
