First topic message reminder :

The Goose Green to Westwood Park Link Road, is due to start construction soon and I know that Tomplum is really looking forward to work on the new road starting and mac said in another topic that they have been pegging out for the road bridge over the stream, so this is a plan of the new road, which has been made by a company called Tekla Smile

That road will make a big difference if it is taken over the main railway line into Lower Ince, which will properly bypass Wigan, the idea is for it to wind round from the roundabout at Westwood Park, away from the old route of the railway line, and cross the mainline line at the same point as the present bridge on Westwood Lane, but do so at an angle cutting across, into where the houses are on Westwood Lane, crossing Warrinton Road at the same location at where the original railway line crossed it Smile

The only way it would make a difference is if it became a Hindley bypass.

Well that is the idea, it will right run from Lower Once through Amberswood, a road will connect with Seaman Way, and the link road will continue and on to the Strangeways, where it will cross Liverpool Road, on a roundabout, and then it will follow the old Wigan Central line up to Atherleigh Way, which itself was an old railway line, and that line, and proposed new road will run parallel with Atherton Road ....

Back in Time!

And that road scheme started in the late 1950's. So, it's taken over 60 years up to date! Rolling Eyes

That made me laugh, Sir Bob. Took longer than 50 years to get this far!

That was published in 1993. Or so it says.

BUT, the project was started by Lancashire County Council, back in the late 50's, coded 'Route 225'.

I agree with all comments, because I don't believe that the link road from Orrell to Sniffy Brook Road is going to get built, the only way would be if the government decided to build the full M58 extension from Orrell to Westhoughton ...

Like I said earlier,  a better route would be from the A49/M6 roundabout at Warrington Road, through Ince.  Followed by a North/South junction.

You should see how quick they construct roads, bridges, roundabouts and viaducts over in Spain. It's an eyeopener!

It is looking good, but I think there is still quite a bit of work to be done at the Chapel Lane end Smile

The new road joins Poolstock, not Chapel Lane.

Tha's agreed wrung!

Chapel Lane starts where the road crosses the River Douglas. Poolstock starts at the same point, only gooin' t'uther road!

Takea look. The new road junction is before (or after, as the case may be) the river passes underneath.

Errrrmmmm A49 Link Road Wigan - Page 17 2027234125

In 2006 the roads and bridges arounfd there, were drastically altered, and that was in preparation for the new road, has well as to open up Westwood Park for business, the Duggie was diverted into a new course, and the existing roads were reorientated, and as a result it looks look like it all changes at the junction now, which is the junction of Westwood Way, Chapel Lane, Poolstock and Westwood Road, and I didn't know that the name for the new road, had already been used at tuther end of road ....

The road sign on the 'other side' of the river ....

The road sign on 'this side' of the river ....

On the junction side of the road, Chapel Lane was continued, over the river, to Westwood Road. The new road junction, Westwood Way, is where Big Ste Timp used to live and his was number 6 Poolstock.

Bob's Nob, that doesn't 'suggest' anything.

Come from the island on Westwood Way, over the canal, and you arrive at the junction. Wigan centre is straight on. Worsley Mesnes is turn left. Arthur Bithell's is turn right.

Turn left and you're on Poolstock . Go straight on and you're on Poolstock (until you cross the junction and reach the River Douglas). Turn right, to go to Arthur Bithell's, and you turn right off Poolstock.

It follows that Westwood Way comes out onto Poolstock. Rolling Eyes

I'm leaning towards Sir Bobs case being proved right here, Poolstock starts at the right turn Off Chapel Lane as you drive out of Wigan, Is my understanding and, if that is correct, The new road connects to chapel Lane with, Poolstock being a 'turn off',

Yes?

Poolstock forks here. One lane bends to the left and is signed "Poolstock" AFTER the junction, beyond the traffic lights, as you cross the river.
The other lane goes straight on. Here, you are stopped on Poolstock, as if to go straight across the junction into Westwood Road.  You are looking across the junction.
If you look to your left of Westwood Road entrance,  you see the traffic lights on Chapel Lane and the right bend into Poolstock.  That's where Poolstock starts. If you look to your right of Westwood Road, you'll see Westwood Way, joining Poolstock.

Westwood Road is off Poolstock, not off Chapel Lane. Westwood Way is turn right off Poolstock.
