Wigan Celebs

First topic message reminder :

Frank Randal

(1901-1957)
Frank Randle was born in Standish in Wigan in 1901. He was a childhood friend of George Formby, (also a Wigan man), who later became his main rival. Randle was probably one of the best music-hall comedians of his day. Curiously, he always appeared on stage without teeth. His career began in 1916, when he appeared as an acrobatic with the stage name of Arthur Twist. His stage acts were distinguished by his wild, extravagant, cheeky dialogues, frequently filled with risqu topics and bad language. Of course, none of this was permitted in his movies, where he appeared as an honest comic cheeky chappie. However, it was to be much later, in the 1930s, before he would achieve notoriety as a comedian and popular entertainer with his own touring company known as "Randle's Scandals" . He was also a popular movie actor/comedian and starred as top of the bill regularly in summer season shows at Blackpool. During the early fifties his health declined and he died in Blackpool in 1957.

This may interest you. Frank Randle was born Arthur Hughes on 30th January 1901 . His Mother was Rhoda Hughes. This is taken from the 1901 Census. Place of Birth on the right hand side says Newsprings.

I know.  But if you lot can make things up about Wigan, I can make things up about why Peter Kane moved to Pewfall!
Actually, what I say about him not being too keen on Wigan is true.  He was a good friend of my dad's, through the fight game, they trained together and had the same manager.

PS., Although there was a Wigan (ish) (within a couple of miles of it, laaaaike) lad called Frank Fallon.  I wonder if any of you knew or know him?
And Dickie Davies?

PPS: You Wigan lot should stop thinking so much about the council and councillors. It'll do you the World of good. You live for the council !

My apologies for missing Brian Finch; I knew him from Wigan Little Theatre. I feel proud when I see his name on "Goodnight Mr. Tom" and various episodes of "Heartbeat".

I hadn't thought of footy players. I think I should include Billy Boston. Although not Wigan born he surely has contributed much to Wigan.
