Hurrah
The Ringspot Cycle will have a smoother ride. And the pedestrians on the flags will have more room.

Mac, 'Warburton' Toll Bridge? I think, not certain though, that it's a private road.

Its the land between the bridge and the pay kiosk that you pay for not the bridge

A few months ago 3 stretches of road were "top dressed" with tar slurry and gravel. Manchester Road Ince, Wigan Road Bryn and one other...
The state of these stretches is now dreadful, not to mention the tons of tarry marks all over peoples' cars mine included..

Yes, it's warburton toll rd. The owners own the land after the bridge until the toll booth (there are two there, apparently they are so close together you don't notice. Anyway, they only own the bit of the road that it under the toll booth. There is a sign there now stating the council are aware of the issue.
Cheers, mache, just seen your post

We drive over Warburton Bridge quite regularly in Summer.
Always makes me laugh as there is a "DANGER WEAK BRIDGE" sign as you drive
over.

Rixton and Warburton Toll Bridge Act 1863 (Hansard)
The Warburton Bridge ... was built in 1863, at a cost of £550, recoverable by toll to be paid at the toll house still extant.

I know, I asked about it, and yet it costs 14 one way or 25p return return. Yesterday they (toll booth workers) caused a jam a chap had to pay with tenner. There was a 100 car queue , and that was on the road to partington only.

1863? Interesting, seeing as the canal construction did not commence until 1887

The toll booth
Warburton Bridge is a privately owned statutory tolled undertaking which incorporates a public highway road length. The high-level cantilever bridge crosses the Manchester Ship Canal on the B5159 road, connecting the A57 with the A6144, and was commissioned under the Rixton & Warburton Bridge Act 1863. The original stone bridge spanned the River Mersey prior to its later diversion into the Manchester Ship Canal. Both bridges and the unadopted approach roads are privately maintained. It is one of the few remaining pre-motorway toll bridges in the United Kingdom, and the only one in Greater Manchester.

There's two bridges there. One went over the Mersey before it was diverted for the canal filling.
