Council considering transferring management of markets to private sector

WIGAN Council is considering transferring the management of all eight markets it operates to the private sector.
The council says it is reviewing the management of the markets – including the indoor one in Leigh and the outdoor ones in Leigh, Tyldesley, Hindley and Atherton – in a bid to secure them a brighter future.
Options include transferring the management of the three main markets (Wigan, Leigh and Ashton) to an external operator, establishing a new body to manage the markets and a community asset transfer.

Are they saying that they have made a b-lls up of managing the markets and are looking for the private sector to sort it out?

Traders and campaigners have given a mixed response to Wigan Council’s review looking at different ways of running the borough’s markets. The local authority has been quizzing stallholders for their opinions on how the indoor and outdoor markets could best thrive. Some have given a cautious welcome to the dialogue but there are different views on whether the current set-up should be preserved or given a shake-up

Pay and Display signs going up at the side of Ashton market behind Wetherspoons, used to be free parking. Could this have something to do with the forthcoming health centre on Bryn Street ?

It's amazing, in this country.

Sorry, but no one here seems to think to ask the public just what THEY want, nor asks the stallholders what THEY want.

After living in Canada for 25 years, I have learned basic knowledge. Over here there doesn't seem to be basic knowledge amongst so called officials.

Very sad indeed.

In true style the WEP have used the wrong photo, the photo that have used is from a story about a doctor retiring.

Whenever I visit the market looks almost empty.  I think a good idea maybe is to relocate those stalls to the main street, like they do when the continental market visits. Maybe a few of the towns businesses would like to have stalls as well, I've seen it  happen in other towns, and it may well attract other stall holders from out of town.  Maybe turn the market area itself into some kind of performance venue.  Just a thought

Another example of the Philistinic faction that operates in the Town Hall.
For years it’s been a case of reacting to events rather than being pro active in promoting market stalls.
Officials should be advising tenants how to minimise or eliminate the liability for business rates. The stalls should be located were there is no requirement to pay rent, ie on the streets.

Proper 'markets' are outdated. A thing of the past.
What you see nowadays are, quite simply, shopping malls. A permanently leased 'shop-inside-a-shop' is not a traditional 'market stall'.
