Major Road Works

on Fri Jul 21 2017, 14:49
Major repair works are set to see significant delays for motorists using one of the main routes leading out of Wigan town centre next month. Structural work has been planned for the 71-year-old Adam Bridge on Southgate, which carries the Wigan to Kirkby line over the River Douglas and is part of the Saddle Junction, this August.

Am I daft or what here, cos I thought that Adam Bridge is the bridge over River Douglas and the bridge the WEP is going on about, the railway bridge is Adam Viaduct and in the roadworks bulletin, they give the address of the roadworks as Adam Bridge, Ormskirk Road and funny enuff, half of Adam Bridge was built in 1984 when they widened the road there and tuther half, the half nearest the railway bridge is the original bridge which is donkeys years old (how old is a donkey) so which bridge is being worked on?

Ormskirk Road (Saddle Junction), Wigan - Major works

Wigan Council will be conducting major structural work on the bridge near to the junction with Southgate in August 2017. The work will require lane closures on Southgate and Saddle junction whilst the work is being carried out and is likely to last around 12 weeks to complete.

Usual WEP incompetence.

Either they are working on the railway viaduct over Southgate, or the bridge over the Douglas.

I wonder if the railway viaduct is 73 yrs old. It is a listed structure.

Under bridge, set within longer railway embankment. 1946 by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway; chief engineer W K Wallace; contractors Leonard Fairclough Limited. Reinforced pre-stressed pre-cast deck units on in-situ reinforced concrete piers set on old foundations. Pre-cast concrete parapet units, and original concrete handrails and standards on east side. Four spans, the end two 29'9" wide, those in the centre 29'4" and 28'6" wide, with a deck formed of `I'-beams 32" deep. The small space between the top flanges of the `I'-beams which supported the tracks is grouted, and high-tensile tie roads, tightened by the nuts at each end, tie the beams together so that they act together under live load.

No.  You're not daft,  they are!

Adam Bridge carries the A49 over the River Douglas, from Pemberton into Wigan, and was built before the 14th century.  71 years old, my arse!  More like 710 years old!!

And Wigan Council wouldn't be working on the top most section of the railway bridge, because Network Rail would be dooing that and train services would be disrupted.

Adam Bridge
River Douglas, north of Wigan, Greater Manchester
associated engineer
William Kelly Wallace
date rebuilt 1947
era Modern | category Railway Viaduct | reference SD572052
ICE reference number HEW 1048
Wallace, chief engineer of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway, designed the rebuilding of this four-span railway viaduct. It was the first bridge in the country to carry live railway loads on pre-stressed precast concrete beams.
The original bridge carried the then Liverpool & Bury Railway and was constructed in 1847. It was strengthened three times before its rebuilding in 1947.
The concrete beams are 2ft 8in deep and six are used per track, plus one for each parapet. Pre-stressed precast beams had been prepared first in 1938-39 for emergency wartime use for replacing damaged road bridges over railways.
Contractor (1947): Leonard Fairclough Ltd.

Arses and elbows!
