I remember the Preston by pass well. In 1962 I was hitch-hiking up to the Lake District with some mates and got a ride on a motor bike when we split up to make it easier to get lifts. The bike was a 1000cc Norton Dominator and there was no speed limit on the new by pass and i could see the speedometer reading 100mph. We did not have helmets in those days either.
