Higher Incers V Lower Incers
on Tue Jan 02 2018, 00:00
Where's the boundary?
Is there one?
I wise man once wrote:
The boundary between Lower Ince and Higher Ince doesn't exist, apart from in the minds of the locals.
Here
And I bet the vast majority of either camp will say they live in Wigan.

There is no official boundary between Higher Ince and Lower Ince. Opinions differ amongst locals. That's because it's not real, only a fairy story.
Fairy story?!

Therefore Britannia Bridge is in Higher Ince, the same as Rose Bridge.
Expect complaints and a gnashing of teeth.

You're getting up to lots of drivelment this morning, Corky! I've not checked, but imagine where the Lower Ince railway line ran would put Britannia Bridge on the Lower Ince side?

Was unaware of a hospital in Ince until seeing the map, Jo Anne.
Google is throwing back info for Ince Ward (RAEI)

A lesser man would now make reference to a filthy joke and use the word contagious.

Mac probably has it right with the railway line.
Makes you wonder if the Higher and Lower titles only appeared after the line went through.

As regards the border, I would say Lower Ince is West of the railway bridge at Ince Central Church (Ince Station), and Higher ince is East of it.

I'd been wondering where the 'boundary' is on the canal towpath. Thinking about it again, is Canal Terrace in either?

I don't think there is a boundary. I reckon, before everything was built up, there was two 'settlements' in Ince in Makerfield, one developing around the Manchester Road and one around the Warrington Road. With a big field between them. All was in Ince in Makerfield, but one got called Higher Ince and one Lower Ince.
That was in the days when it was obvious. Two settlements, with half a mile of countryside between them. You'd probably be able to see one from another and the local lads would meet up, on the field in the middle, throw stones at each other and, sometimes, have a fight.
Nowadays, everything is built up and merged into one.
And nobody wants to live in Lower Ince anymore, it has to be called Spring View! A bit like anybody who lives at the top end of Westhoughton all want to say they live in Lostock, 'cos it's a bit posh in Lostock!!

Ince is an old word for 'marsh', I have read in Past Forward the area around Clarrington Forge was originally boggy marshland.
Past Forward - It Happened in Ince
I draw your attention to the Higher and Lower Lane reference to Sunday walks to church.

- New public notice-board on Warrington Road, Lower Ince -
"These have been appearing in various places in the 'Township' of Wigan North. The crest is that of the former Ince-in-Makerfield Urban District Council, which was absorbed into the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in 1974".
What sort of illogical folk are we maulin' wi' 'ere?
The township of Wigan North is south of Wigan?
And Ince-in-Makerfield Urban District Council, was NOT absorbed into the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in 1974.
Them's knownowts!
