I think these scumbags you see on the streets, begging in Wigan are doing this because they have had their benefits stopped, because long term unemployed have got to sign on everyday, first thing in order to stop them staying in bed and they have to search for work online for I think it is 39 hours a week and they have to apply for a certain number of jobs every week and these scumbags don't do that, so that is why they have no money and they are begging on the streets ...

There's been a bit of aggro in recent months when buskers set up in proximity to beggars, I won't call them homeless because most of them aren't. One busker I spoke to had to move from Market Place after being threatened and found a spot in the galleries, not as much passing trade but at least it keeps the weather off.

I speak to Kevin ( the ex forces homeless man on the canal) regular as i pass him, He does not want a home, he's happy in the woods no matter how cold it is, He gets colds/flu like anyone else, but likes it outdoors, he's happy for any help, a blanket, a cup of hot coffee, and people having a chat to him, I know everyone is different but not all homeless want a home, a drop of kindness goes a long way,

Numbers of estimated deaths of homeless people in 2017 and figures per million total population are shown in Table 2 for the combined authorities (city regions) in England and London. The highest mortality was in the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (CA), with 50 deaths (17.8 per million population). West Midlands (CA) and Liverpool City Region (CA) had the second- and third-largest numbers.

WIGAN'S flagship homeless hub will open for the first time this week, council bosses have said.

The borough’s two hubs, with Leigh’s site already open, are at the forefront of the town hall’s new approach to helping rough sleepers.

Based at the town centre’s Coops Building – with refurbishment works costing £363,000 – the Wigan site will provide emergency beds and access to vital support services.

Cllr Terry Halliwell, cabinet member for welfare and reform, said he was ‘so pleased’ the facility will be open before Christmas, meeting the council’s original timescale.

I remember a little story from a few years ago when mobile phones were not very common and were quite expensive so few people had one.

A chappie was stood opposite a beggar on the streets in London. He put his hand into his pocket to retrieve a few shekels for the poor lad when the lad's mobile phone rang. The chappie couldn't afford an expensive item such as a mobile phone so when he heard this beggars mobile phone ringing he quickly kept his money in his pocket. and walked away as fast as he could.

A £53.7m pound contract to bolster services for the homeless has gone out to tender. Wigan Council, which is funding the multi-million pound project, is looking to provide “supported accommodation” alongside a range of other services for homeless adults or those at risk of becoming homeless. The town hall has revealed that its plan is to build on the existing support available for homeless people, to guide them long term once they are out of crisis.

Enterprising young people at Wigan Youth Zone have come up with a bold business idea to tackle homelessness and help the planet at the same time.

Project Homezone has been set up at the Parson’s Walk facility as an entry for the Young Enterprise Competition.

After going through a number of different ideas for innovative products they could market they hit on the idea of turning shipping containers into housing for those without a roof over their heads.

And although the team, aged between 12 and 16, was pipped to the post in the contest by a group from Winstanley College, the council and the project’s business supporters were so impressed they have vowed to help make the idea a reality.
