More sympathy for the killers than the cop. (Last paragraph).
That case features in one of those Wigan's Victorian Murders books also, Mester.

William Kearsley was my Great Great Grandfather on my Mothers side of the family. It was always stated in the family that Winstanley had given up, he knew he was caught... and yet Kidd continued to beat the living daylights out of him Winstanley did lash out with the knife because he was in fear of his life.

I have an old Bobby's truncheon that I found in a pile of crap when they drained the cut to clean it out, this would about 1969 near the Empress locks, may have been a bit further down.

Aye, that's what they all say!

Seriously though, it does make you wonder. I was surprised to see the officer apparently received less sympathy than the criminals. Hence my mentioning it.
Something we'll never know.

Although he did "lash out" several times, then again you would if you was on the receiving end of a beating. Great tale of wrongdoers and the law though.
