Graves in the middle of a (Small) field

In Hindley. Go Along Bridge street, turn left at parkside, just before Acorns care home. There is a square of railings. Inside the square are some gravestones (flat ones). So there.

Have they built over some graves? Do you know anything about them?

According to 'Side by Side maps, there was a street there called Bridge Croft Street, which had a chapel on it and according to the law, graves cannot be disturbed for 200 years after burial, so I would presume those graves are something to doo with the chapel which was there, same as that graveyard up Pem ....

Yes, they were, and the Council can't touch them.
Least the land is safe.
The congregation originated in the secession of a minority from St. Paul's, Hindley, led by the then minister, Rev. William Turner. The chapel itself was opened in 1839 at the Bridge Croft, and remained on the same site until the area was cleared in the 1960's. Originally an Independent foundation, the chapel was certainly Congregational by 1909. See J. Leyland, Memorials of Hindley (, 1873)

It isn't true that a graveyard cannot be disturbed for 200 years. St.Paul's in Hindley was. So was Newton congrigational.
Dug 'em up, they did. Dug 'em up, I tells thee!
The council can't touch what's not theirs. My friend owns St.Paul's!

Well, yeah, kind of thing. He is a 'mon' and he lives in Cheshire (where all t'well off folk live), so he's definately 'yon'.
It follows then, that yes, he is 'yon mon'! Whoever 'yon mon' may be?

There are trees growing through the flags now, and they are all but obscured.

The history of the breakaway is on Lancs OPC Vixen. Look under St Pauls Independent Chapel, on the Hindley Thread, NOT the Wigan thread. Must admit though that there isn't a lot about it.

She was brought up in Bryn and lives not far from you.
I wouldn't say she, or her ex-husband (also a friend of mine) are 'important'! Of course, it all depends on what makes a person 'important'?

There used to be a Chapel & Grave yard on the corner of Clap gate Lane & Warrington Road in Goose Green But They Dug all the Graves up & Demolished The Chapel To Build a Dual Carriageway.Dont think they were. over 200 Years old.

Don't worry, I won't think they were over 200 years old because they don't need to be.
