Just getting through 'The Road to Wigan Pier'. It's very interesting and he is very blunt. A good man and a good writer.

Happy Birthday.  He would have been 112 years old but his memory lives on.

Not so often I disagree with you Fred, but "The Road to Wigan Pier" is probably the worst book I have ever read. He was interesting in his description of his time in the lodging house, with the various guests, and his time down the pit but the rest is just a meandering social documentary recording the working conditions and deprivations of the time. I found it tedious and boring and I couldn't wait to finish it.
That said, he was a great writer and "1984" and "Animal Farm" are both well worth a read.

.............................and yes Happy Birthday

You are right, Ray. The beginning is the most interesting since it deals with Miry Lane and the surrounds. I am struggling with the rest of the book but still find it interesting as I get older. Among men, sex sometimes results in intimacy; among women, intimacy sometimes results in sex.
France is the only place where you can make love in the afternoon without people hammering on your door.
After forty a woman has to choose between losing her figure or her face. My advice is to keep your face, and stay sitting down.

Fifty years ago today, at age 19 with a wife and baby girl. I emigrated to Canada.

My first time on plane also. What a memorable time it was.

Photos of Montreal on that day as we came in to land.

21st July 1796 Robert Burns, Scottish poet died, aged 37.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Burns

Farewell to the Highlands, farewell to the North,
The birth-place of Valour, the country of Worth;
Wherever I wander, wherever I rove,
The hills of the Highlands for ever I love.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

Farewell to the mountains high covered with snow;
Farewell to the straths and green valleys below;
Farewell to the forests and wild-hanging woods;
Farewell to the torrents and loud-pouring floods.

My heart's in the Highlands, my heart is not here;
My heart's in the Highlands a-chasing the deer;
A-chasing the wild-deer, and following the roe,
My heart's in the Highlands wherever I go.

Always thought 'wantage' should be a word indicative of the amount of desire that exists for something.

23rd August

1305 Scottish patriot William Wallace was hanged, beheaded, and quartered in London, and his body parts were later displayed in different cities. His barbaric murder came as a result of Wallace's efforts to free Scotland from the occupying English forces.

23rd Aug
1995 movie Braveheart was based on Wallace's life. The National Wallace Monument  is on the outskirts of Stirling.
