Jan 29th..1820 King George 111 dies

Ten years after mental illness forced him to retire from public life, King George III, the British king who lost the American colonies, dies at the age of 82.

In 1760, 20-year-old George succeeded his grandfather, George II, as king of Great Britain and Ireland. Although he hoped to govern more directly than his predecessor had, King George III was unable to find a minister he could trust, until 1770, when he appointed Lord North as his chief minister. Lord North proved able to manage Parliament and willing to follow royal leadership, but George's policy of coercion against the American colonists led to the outbreak of the American War for Independence.

The subsequent loss of England's most profitable colonies contributed to growing opposition to the king, but in 1784 his appointment as prime minister, William Pitt (the younger), succeeded in winning a majority in Parliament. After Pitt's ascendance, the king retired from active participation in government, except for occasional interference in major issues such as Catholic Emancipation, which was defeated in 1801.

In 1765, the king suffered a short nervous breakdown and in the winter of 1788-89 a more prolonged mental illness. By 1810, he was permanently insane. It has been suggested that he was a victim of the hereditary disease porphyria, a defect of the blood that can cause mental illness when not treated. He spent the rest of his life in the care of his devoted wife, Charlotte Sophia, whom he had married in 1761. Following his retirement from public life, his son, the Prince of Wales, was named regent and upon his father's death in 1820 ascended to the throne as King George IV.

7th Feb 1812

Charles Dickens, English journalist and novelist was born. He is considered the greatest novelist of the Victorian period. He created characters such as Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby and David Copperfield and amongst his other works were The Old Curiosity Shop, A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Bleak House and many, many more
Charles Dickens came from a poor family, but he was lucky enough to attend school.
Unfortunately, after his father was jailed for having ‘bad debts’, Charles Dickens was forced to leave school and start work in a blacking factory (a boot polish factory). He worked there for three years. The conditions were very poor and Charles Dickens suffered from loneliness.
Dickens started to write as a journalist. He contributed articles to journals called The Mirror of Parliament and The True Sun.
In 1833 he was employed as the parliamentary reporter for The Morning Chronicle newspaper. He also started to produce a series of sketches. He called himself Boz when he published these.
In 1836 Charles Dickens married Catherine Hogarth. She was the daughter of one of his editors, George Hogarth.
Later in 1836, a story by Dickens, The Pickwick Papers was published as a serial. This proved to be very popular and Dickens started to become famous.
Charles Dickens went on to produce a massive amount of material during his lifetime. He published fifteen novels, wrote hundreds of short stories and non-fiction pieces, lectured and performed both in England and in the United States, wrote plays, wrote thousands of letters and edited two journals.
After having ten children together, Charles Dickens and Catherine Hogarth separated in 1858. Dickens then had a relationship with Ellen Ternan, an actress.
Dickens was interested in the paranormal. He was a member of The Ghost Club.
In 1865 Charles Dickens was involved in the Staplehurst Rail Crash. His was the only first class carriage to avoid running off the tracks. Apparently, Dickens helped many of the wounded passengers before rescuers arrived.
Charles Dickens died on 9th June 1870. He suffered a stroke after completing a full day’s work on his novel in progress, Edwin Drood. He was buried in Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey.
Charles Dickens has appeared on the British £10 note

ON this day 8th Feb in 1587 Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded at Fotheringay Castle.

Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland was most commonly known by the title Mary Queen of Scots, the only surviving child of James V, she acceded the throne when she was just six-years-old. Briefly Queen consort of France after she married the Dauphin, Francis. Mary longed to return to her homeland and finally arrived at Leith in 1561 following the death of her husband.

It was not long before the politics of her homeland found her imprisoned and forced to abdicate by a plot to see her removed from the throne.

She fled south to seek refuge in the home of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I.

Mary had previously claimed Elizabeth’s throne as her own and was considered the legitimate sovereign of England by many English Catholics.

This led to her being imprisoned in England for the best part of twenty years. A plot was discovered in 1586 which would involve a Catholic revolt and the assassination of Elizabeth. This sealed Mary’s fate. Mary was 44 at the time of her death.

And doesn't that picture knock on the head the vision that most people have of the two of them, especially Victoria, who most picture as the overweight, miserable Widow of Windsor.   Here she is a young woman deeply in love. I love you

By the way. Did you know that it was this dress that started the tradition for White wedding dresses. Previous to this they just wore their Sunday Best. Very Happy
